Ginny del Rosario,
coordinator of the Iowa Red Hat Convention 2006.

A group of mostly red hatters/pink hatters, members of the Red Hat Society, joined together to form an email fan club for Joan Medlicott. There are twenty-five currently in the group " The Ladies of the Midwest Send Their Love To Joan ". Although most of the members are from Illinois and Iowa, there are also members in New Mexico, New York, Florida, Indiana and Wisconsin. Introduced to Ms. Medlicott's books by Ginny del Rosario and Patt Riggins from the Ravishing Reds of Des Moines, Kathleen Evans-Mazur, Queen Mother of The Scarlet la-TEA-das< in Harwood Heights, Illinois, thought it would be a great idea to begin an email fan club. No meetings to attend, just emails and sharing thoughts over the phone.

Many in the group have already completed the current series of books and anxiously await the next book in the continuing series. Those that have finished have started reading the books over again, while they await the new book. The group has enjoyed reading the books, relating to the characters, and making the recipes included in the books. The Iowa convention next year will feature Joan Medlicott and many of the members of the group are attending the convention, looking forward to meeting her in person. If you're interested in joining, please email redhattersmatter@hotmail.com. Fun and frivolity guaranteed!

A fan club was formed in 2003 to support the writing of Joan Medlicott and:

TO ENRICH OUR LIVES WITH NEW FRIENDSHIPS THROUGH THE COVINGTON LADIES BOOKS.

The Purpose of the fan club is:

1. To provide a forum to meet and discuss Joan’s books.
2. To provide an opportunity to examine and share experiences
3. To encourage, and explore new endeavors
4. To provide hope, courage and acceptance of life’s changes.

The first meeting was held in November 2003 to get acquainted and to view a video of an interview with Joan on PBS BookWatch in North Carolina. This gave members a closer perspective of Joan and her writing.

With an enrollment of 20 members the group met for a luncheon in honor of Joan’s visit to Sarasota on February 13, 2005. We learned more in depth techniques of Joan’s writings and discussed ways the fan club can help promote her books and how she can help the fan club.

The group will meet periodically for discussion of her books, and to advance camaraderie among the members.

If you are interested in joining this club who live in the Sarasota/Bradenton FL. Area, call Bev Whitlock at 941-351-5752, or e-mail at: bevwhit@tampabay.rr.com

A Ladies of Covington Fan Club Story - Stranger Than Fiction

Two women, sharing the love of Joan Medlicott's writing, one in Florida, one in California, independently formed Joan Medlicott Fan Clubs in their respective states unbeknownst to each other.

As self-appointed presidents of the clubs, they connected with each other through e-mail to share fan club happenings. The first question one asks is, how did you come to read Joan's books? The California president, Ann, said that a friend in Pennsylvania sent her the paperback of the first book, THE LADIES OF COVINGTON SEND THEIR LOVE. Bev, from Florida wrote back and asked where in Pennsylvania did her friend live. Bev told her that she was originally from Pennsylvania, more exact, from Warren. Ann wrote back stating she also was from Pennsylvania, and also from Warren! Then, they found that they had not only been born and raised in the same town, but lived on the same street in adjacent houses just a few years apart.<

They went to the same schools, had same teachers, and each had a best friend named Peggy. It happened that Ann's friend Peggy worked at the summer playground where Bev played; and Bev's friend Peggy was in charge of the guest book at Ann's wedding.

Another interesting coincidence is Ann's mother was from a town in Pennsylvania called Greenville where she was raised. She attended Thiel College in Greenville as did Bev. Also, Ann had relatives who lived on the corner of the street that Bev and her husband lived on for a few years during their tenure in Greenville.

The amazing journey through the past has found connections beyond belief! To think none of this would have happened without the writings of Joan Medlicott. A wonderful bond and friendship has formed just like Joan writes in her books.

We hope that members throughout the various fan clubs can find bonds and friendships to share experiences and acceptances of life's changes.<

Thanks all to Joan!
